In Zimbabwe alone, our project seeks to mobilize 10, 000 motorists to cycle or walk for a distance of about 40 km either going to work, shopping or any other social event for a month every year, hence reducing carbon emissions.
Simuka Africa Youth Association plans to engage learning institutions, corporations, religious organizations, professional bodies, development partners and governments. Our efforst will also encourage their memberships and individuals within their sphere of influence to consider cycling and or walking as a mode of transport during the hiking and biking month.
It is inevitable that many people will wonder about the impact of environmental air quality on lungs or worry that yet another hurricane will unleash life-threatening floods to take everything they own. This is the new reality the global population face every day due to climate change.
Populations from the global south and other less developed countries are paying the greatest price in the climate crisis, despite contributing the least its acceleration.
The Climate Reality Project 2021 publication indicated that climate change is projected to cause an additional 250,000 death each year by 2030, primarily in developing countries. This calls for the urgent need to amplify our collective efforts and actions on climate change in particular climate justice.
Simuka Africa Youth Association in cooperation with our UNV Online Volunteers always seek to amplify our collect voices with actions toward climate change.
The event, which will be held annually each June, will enable more than a million young people and other stakeholders to explore the beauty of nature. We believe the need to preserve it will increase lobbying of global leaders, development partners and corporations to act on climate change.
Furthermore, the hiking and biking activities will promote active travelling by swapping cars for cycling and walking, hence contributing to reduction of carbon emissions by estimated 7.560 tons during the month of June of every year.
