The Norton Library

Simuka Africa Youth  has created safe spaces for children to access mental health and social support, such as counseling, talent identification, mentoring and homework tutoring. We established a community library at the Norton Vocational Training Centre with the assistance from the Book Feeding Project and the All the Sky Foundation.

The Norton Library encourages a culture of reading, researching and learning among young people from Norton. In addition, the project also empowers girls at risk of child marriage by providing life skills training, educational options, and career advancement. The Norton Library also serves as a  safe space for girls to discuss their futures, overcome social isolation and develop support networks.

The Norton Library Digital Literacy Program

Computer literacy, Internet proficiency, and A.I. programming are all critical aspects of career development. For this reason, we seek to provide a 3-month digital literacy program for at-risk youth and child marriage survivors in our area to help them transition into better career positions and educational opportunities.

By beginning this program, we are looking to equip the next generation of bright minds to find the solutions we need to the crises we have not yet imagined. If successful, we would expand this pilot program into a larger body of classes.

  • Phase I of the pilot program will consist of the installation of a 15-20 unit computer lab at The Norton Library, complete with a solar grid and panels.

  • We expect the installation to take about one month to six weeks to complete.

  • The computers would utilize open source educational software programs, such as Kolibri (Learning Equality), Rachel (World Possible), Midjourney, ChatGPT, Arduinos, and Fpgas.

  • Phase II will involve ICT teacher training in conjunction with OER-Africa with a curriculum derived from The OER Commons and Microsoft's Career Essentials in Generative AI alongside an active collaboration with the Zimbabwe Ministry of Education to meet Zimbabwe educational standards.

  • As we intend to recruit 4-6 seasoned professionals, we anticipate 2 months of training and local student registration.

Supporting At-Risk Youth in Zimbabwe

Simuka Africa Youth Association remains committed to helping at-risk youth to become the best version of themselves. Through the support of our volunteers and donors, we have been able to make a difference in the lives of countless individuals.

We already know literacy and education are proven methods that break poverty cycles and increase the standard of living in Zimbabwe. The use of Artificial Intelligence training at The Norton Library  will provide additional marketable skills for career advancement as this technology becomes standardized globally.

So we're asking you to imagine a world where our youth are limitless in a sustainable world. Let's take the first steps together. Support our mission by donating here.
