The Norton Library

Engagement

Simuka Africa Youth  has created safe spaces for children to access mental health and social support, such as counseling, talent identification, mentoring and homework tutoring.

Engagement

Engagement

We established a community library at the Norton Vocational Training Centre with the assistance from the Book Feeding Project and the All the Sky Foundation. Here, the Simuka Africa Staff processes a book donation.

Outreach

The Norton Library encourages a culture of reading, researching and learning among young people from Norton. In addition, the project also empowers girls at risk of child marriage by providing life skills training, educational options, and career advancement.

Many thanks to Libraries For All and All The Sky Foundation for developing the original library project idea and financing the construction, equipping and library activities on behalf of Simuka Africa.

Our current partners recognize the demand for library facilities and services are increasing against a background of limited space and diminished community opportunities. This places an emphasis on the necessity of  expanding.

The NORTON LIBRARY EXPANSION

The Norton Library Plans

Welcome to a brighter future

Simuka Africa plans to construct a bigger library infrastructure that caters for up to 300 young people per day from the current 100 young people per day. This will achieved after fundraising initiatives to raise the estimated US $150,000 needed to complete the construction of the library. We also seek to:

  • Equip the library with learning materials and equipment such as computers, printers, books, softwares and internet facilities.
  • Offer low cost services such as internet, laminating, photocopying, typing , battery charging and computer lessons.
  • Facilitate topical discussions such as HIV and AIDS, Sexual Reproductive Health, Gender Based Violence and career development.
  • Provide training services such as business management, ICT, Climate smart farming and waste management.
  • Establish psycho-social services to youth, such as homework support, reading lessons, arts and crafts, counselling, art therapy, and career guidance.
  • Maintain recreational activities (play therapy), such as computer games, sports, music, arts and dance.

A.I. Education

Simuka Africa Youth Association remains committed to helping at-risk youth to become the best version of themselves. Through the support of our volunteers and donors, we have been able to make a difference in the lives of countless individuals.

We already know literacy and education are proven methods that break poverty cycles and increase the standard of living in Zimbabwe. The use of Artificial Intelligence training at The Norton Library  will provide additional marketable skills for career advancement as this technology becomes standardized globally.

For example, this graphic is AI Art created by volunteer staff member Adithya Muralidharan.  Learning how to create similar graphic design will help our Zimbabwean youth stay competitive with global advances. So we're asking you to imagine a world where our youth are limitless in a sustainable world. Let's take the first steps together!

THE DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM

Computer literacy, Internet proficiency, and A.I. programming are all critical aspects of career development.

  • We currently have a computer lab at The Norton Library and seek to complete it with a solar grid and panels.
  • We will then launch a 3-month digital literacy program for at-risk youth  in our area to help them transition into better career positions and educational opportunities.
  • We hope to provide the students with an accredited certificate of computer literacy in Microsoft software, introductory Python programming, internet proficiency on 2-4 social media platforms (Instagram, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter/Pinterest), & graphic design instruction (Canva, Chat GPT, Midjourney).

This graphic is another example of AI Art that has been created by staff member Adithya Muralidharan. With this program, we are looking to equip the next generation of bright minds to find the solutions we need to the crises we have not yet imagined.
