The Simuka World Hikes Initiative

Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.9 set by the United Nations aims to devise and implement policies to improve sustainable tourism 7&employment. 


The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) defines tourism as a social, cultural and  economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to places outside of  their usual environment for personal or professional purposes. 


Simuka Africa Youth  Association seeks to turn the promises of these targets into reality  through identifying, developing and promoting hiking and trekking sites in 8 rural provinces of  Zimbabwe.

Hiking and trekking present various opportunities for growth. These include:


  • Creating employment for local youth. 
  • Generate revenue to government.
  • Recreation and personal growth.
  • Developing local infrastructure.
  • Maintaining natural environments. 
  • Preserving cultural assets & traditions.
  • Physical & emotional well-being .
  • Team building, peace and harmony.
  • Research and knowledge sharing.

Simuka Africa Youth Association:


  • Seeks to work with local youth groups from 8 rural provinces of Zimbabwe. 
  • Our project will organize hiking and trekking events aimed at promoting rural tourism. 
  • The target market will include religious institutions, corporates, sports organizations, educational institutions, social clubs, families, and individuals.

  • Share  their experiences.

  • Invite others to join the Simuka World Hikes Community.

Objectives

Simuka Africa Youth Association will:


  1. Establish a management unit led by the National Project  Coordinator who will be tasked with supervising Provincial Project Management Teams.
  2. The  Provincial Management Teams will comprise of representatives from youth and women in the 8 rural  provinces of Zimbabwe. 
  3. They will be involve other key stakeholders, such as responsible government  departments. 
  4. Women and young people will be encouraged to form cooperatives to further manage their tourism ventures.

Rural areas in Zimbabwe:


  1. Contain vast natural resources, including hills, mountains, forests and caves that make outdoor recreation & exercise worthwhile.
  2. Have an urgent need to preserve and maintain these endowments by creating tourism services towards this aim.
  3. Can be empowered by having substantial control in the management and oversight of community-based tourism enterprises 
  4. Will be equipped to provide a better standard of living because a major portion of the tourism benefits remain within their communities.

The Ministry of Local Government, Traditional Chiefs and Headmen can:


  1. Assist with the identification of local hills, mountains and forests suitable for community-based tourism. 
  2. Ensure community-based  enterprises  add value to the project sites through planting trees, valley reclamation, bee keeping projects, and discouraging visitors and local people to indiscriminately cut trees.  
  3. Conduct awareness on climate change, biodiversity preservation  and sustainable use of natural resources.
